Thinking about finally fixing my teeth but kinda torn between traditional braces and clear aligners. Anyone tried both? Curious which one made you feel less awkward or self-conscious in public...

I totally get where you're coming from—went through the same dilemma myself about two years ago. I initially went with traditional braces because my orthodontist convinced me they'd be quicker and more effective for my specific case. Honestly, the first week or two felt super awkward. I was hyper-aware of them, constantly worried about food getting stuck, and felt like everyone was staring at my mouth (spoiler alert: they weren't, lol).

After about six months, I switched to clear aligners due to a move and changing orthodontists. At first, I thought aligners would be the magic solution—practically invisible, removable, and way less noticeable, right? Well... yes and no. They definitely made me feel less self-conscious at work meetings and social events, but there were some unexpected downsides. Like, having to discreetly pop them out before meals or coffee breaks got old fast. And let's not even talk about the awkwardness of brushing your teeth in public restrooms after lunch—felt like I was back in middle school gym class all over again.

But overall, if we're strictly talking about feeling less awkward in public, clear aligners win hands down for me. Most people didn't even notice I had them unless I pointed it out. With braces, even though friends and coworkers got used to them quickly, I still caught myself covering my mouth when laughing or smiling for photos. Aligners just felt more natural and less intrusive in daily life.

That said, everyone's different. If your teeth need major adjustments, traditional braces might be faster or more effective, so it's worth weighing that against the temporary awkwardness. Either way, after a couple weeks, you'll probably stop noticing as much as you think you will. Good luck—it's totally worth it in the end!

Interesting perspective, but honestly, I found traditional braces way less hassle overall. Yeah, aligners are discreet, but constantly taking them out before eating got annoying fast. Plus, I was always paranoid about losing them or accidentally tossing them in the trash (which happened once...ugh). With braces, sure they're noticeable at first, but after a few weeks, nobody really cares or notices anymore. Just my two cents—sometimes convenience beats invisibility.

Totally get what you're saying about aligners—I had a mini heart attack once after leaving mine wrapped in a napkin at a restaurant. But honestly, braces made me feel way more self-conscious at first. I remember being super aware every time I smiled or laughed, worrying about food stuck in them. Eventually, though, you're right—people stop noticing, and you kinda forget they're even there. Both options have their quirks, I guess it just depends on what bothers you less in the long run.

Yeah, the napkin thing is exactly what worries me about aligners. I'm already pretty anxious about losing things, and knowing myself, I'd probably panic every time I took them out in public. But the braces food issue sounds stressful too—I'm already self-conscious enough about my teeth without worrying if there's spinach stuck in them. Did anyone find one easier to manage anxiety-wise after getting used to it?
